After his mother’s death, he loathed his new step-mother and half-brother, often times blaming them for his own misery.However, by the end of the novel, Connolly has developed this theme so expertly that David’s characterization seems so natural and as though he (and readers, alike) have truly learned a valuable lesson. Not only was family a prominent aspect of the king’s life, it was also a huge aspect of David’s family. Lastly, I liked the prevalent theme of family that was so instilled in the story.

I thought Connolly did a great job with his creation of this character and his writing was so great it made me feel a true conflict of emotions. He was protecting David, yet was menacing all the while and seemed threatening to our protagonist. I could not tell whether I was supposed to like him or hate him. One of the biggest mysteries of the novel for me was the Crooked Man. I never really knew what would come next in this story, always being surprised by the turn of events and plot reveals laden in the tale. However, I really enjoyed it! Reading it went so quickly and I was so fascinated by the world Connolly created. I love stories that reimagine fairy tales and their characters, but this one seemed to be a bit more “adult” than what I was looking for. Review: I went into this novel skeptical, yet optimistic. He eventually discovers his purpose for being in this world is to help defeat the tyrant king and uncover his many secrets - secrets that he keeps contained in The Book of Lost Things. In this world, he makes many new friends, and encounters just as many foes. One day while David ventures out to his garden, a plane comes crashing down on the property and he is forced to hide in a hole in the wall - a hole that leads him to another world. Summary: Ever since his mother’s untimely death, twelve-year-old David has been mourning the loss and isolating himself in his room, surrounded by nothing but his books.
